General questions about omega-3 fatty acids

Are there signs if the body is not supplied with enough omega-3?

In the case of some diseases, an omega-3 deficiency can be assumed and the course of the disease can be alleviated by the intake of omega-3 fatty acids. In general, the Western diet is mostly associated with an omega-3 deficiency. Direct signs are not really noticed because they are often already part of everyday life and people have learned to live with them (sleep disturbances, lack of concentration, digestive problems, etc.). In addition, many autoimmune diseases can be caused by a deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids, although no changes in the body have been noticed before.

How can the body be supplemented with omega-3?

The best alternative is still the conservative method: by eating plenty of fish, such as mackerel, salmon or herring. But as listed in the question “How much omega-3 does fish contain?”, you would need to eat 100 g of herring, 250 g of salmon, or 1.5 kg of trout every day to get enough omega-3 (2 g per day). Another source of omega-3 is flax oil and other plants. However, marine omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) are considered to have more beneficial properties than plant omega-3 fatty acid (ALA). The human body can only convert a small percentage (0.5 – 10.0%) of ALA into EPA and DHA.

How much omega-3 does fish contain?

The omega-3 content of a fish depends on the species. In herring there are about 2 g of omega-3 per 100 g. This makes herring a good natural source of omega-3 fatty acids. Tuna, salmon and mackerel are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, although about 250 g of salmon is required for 2 g of omega-3. In other conventional types of fish, the omega-3 levels are rather low. For example, you need to consume 1.5 kg of trout to absorb 2 g of omega-3.

Is it possible to get enough omega-3 into the body through the daily diet?

Yes, it is theoretically possible. However, you would have to consume large amounts of certain foods. Realistically, however, this is only feasible for very few people. To ensure the intake of about 2 g, the daily dosage recommended by doctors, of omega-3 fatty acids per day, you would have to consume about 100 g of herring, 150 g of tuna, 250 g of salmon, 300 g of mackerel, 1.5 kg of trout or 3 kg of cod per day.

What do I have to bear in mind when taking omega-3 fatty acids and blood-thinning agents at the same time?

The effect of blood-thinning agents can be enhanced by omega-3. The mutual enhancement depends on the type and dose of the preparations used. In this case, you should seek advice from your doctor.

Which omega-3 oil should I take?

When approaching the answer to this question from the mode of action, the ratios of EPA and DHA are crucial. EPA is primarily involved in the regulation of inflammation and DHA is primarily essential for cognitive function and nerve health. Both fatty acids are present in all oils, but in Omega-3 Total proportionally more EPA and in Omega-3 Vegan and Omega-3 Arctic more DHA. Accordingly, a distinction can be made: Metabolism, heart, rheumatism, allergies etc. i.e. all chronic diseases with inflammation involvement -> Omega-3 Total. Dementia, ADHD, brain development during pregnancy rather with Omega-3 Vegan or Arctic.

But first and foremost, every customer should feel good and like the product! After all, in addition to the effect, it is also about taste, price or a general plant-based diet. If you are unsure, we are of course very happy to help you with a personal consultation: 030 555 788 990 (DE) 0800 070 908 (AT).

Why is a good omega-3 important?

Many beneficial properties are attributed to marine omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA). For example, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published the following for the maintenance of essential bodily functions that can be attributed to marine omega-3 fatty acids:

  • EPA and DHA contribute to normal heart function.
  • DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision
  • DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function
  • DHA and EPA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride levels
  • Maternal intake of DHA contributes to normal eye and brain development in the fetus and breastfed infant
  • DHA intake contributes to normal development of vision in infants up to 12 months of age

If there is a major imbalance of omega fatty acids, this can lead to silent inflammation in the body. These can develop into major diseases because omega-6 promotes inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect.

NORSAN Algae Oil

Are there heavy metals in the algae oil?

The NORSAN algae oil is cultivated low in pollutants. Due to the sustainable cultivation, the algae and thus also the algae oil are not exposed to the natural pollutants, heavy metals and PCB’S of the world’s oceans. Despite all this, the algae oil is cleaned and checked during production.

From which algae is NORSAN algae oil obtained?

Decisive for the quality of the algae oil is the right selection of the raw material – i.e. the algae. The microalgae, Schizochytrium sp., forms the basis for our vegan algae oil. This type of algae is a marine microalgae and consists of microscopic single-celled algae. This type of algae is native to mangrove forests on tropical coasts. It feeds purely on organic and plant matter, such as dead leaves. The special thing about this alga is that it forms the two so important marine omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA.

How does the sustainability aspect manifest itself in the NORSAN algae oil?

The Omega-3 Vegan is cultivated in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. The microalgae we use for Omega-3 Vegan are not sourced from the sea. By cultivating them in artificial seawater, we conserve resources and preserve the nutritional basis for fish. Because fish also enrich their omega-3 content via algae. Thus we do not interfere with the natural ecosystem of the sea and the fish and krill stocks are protected. We are aware of our responsibility towards the sea and its inhabitants and therefore like to give something back. Supporting non-profit organizations dedicated to the protection of marine habitats is particularly close to our hearts.

Is there a big difference between linseed oil and algae oil?

Linseed oil is the native vegetable oil with the highest omega-3 content (over 50%) and its use contributes to a healthy and balanced diet. However, linseed oil does not contain the important omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are considered particularly important for health and are contained in the vegetable algae oil. Even though our body can convert the alpha-linolenic acid present in linseed oil into EPA and DHA to a certain degree (conversion factor between 0.5% and 10%), linseed oil is not sufficient to compensate for an EPA or DHA deficit.

A vegetable omega-3 oil with a high marine omega-3 fatty acid content (EPA and DHA) is NORSAN Algae Oil – 100% fish-free.

What criteria are important when choosing a good algae oil?

The following quality factors should be checked:

  • Rich in EPA and DHA (many algae oils contain only DHA).
  • High omega-3 content
  • Extraction of the oil as naturally as possible, no subsequent higher concentration of omega-3 fatty acids in the oil
  • Above all, favorable analytical values such as TOTOX value, heavy metals and PCBs
  • Sustainability
  • Pure vegetable and 100% vegan

Omega-3 Vegan Algae Oil meets these criteria and thus reflects a high quality standard.

NORSAN Fish Oil

Are there heavy metals in NORSAN fish oil and cod oil?

As the oceans become increasingly polluted, this also affects the fish in the world’s oceans. The further up the food chain the fish are, the higher the PCB and heavy metal contamination. For example, sardines have lower levels than cod.

NORSAN oils are carefully purified from PCBs and heavy metals in Norway. Thus, the oils also show best values in this respect: Less than one fifth of the EU maximum limit and comparatively only 2% of the amounts contained in a portion (100 g) of cod.

From which fish are NORSAN fish oils obtained?

Decisive for the quality of the fish oils is the right selection of the raw material – i.e. the fish. NORSAN fish oil comes from sustainable fisheries (wild catch) and is produced in Norway. Mainly for the fish oil small deep sea fish from wild catch like sardines, mackerels and anchovies are caught and immediately processed and cooled on board. The fish come exclusively from the Atlantic. The cod processed in NORSAN Cod Oil also comes from wild catch, from the Arctic Ocean off the Norwegian coast. For both oils, we attach great importance to the freshness of the oil, so that often only 2 to 4 hours pass from catch to processing.

Is there a big difference between linseed oil and fish oil?

Linseed oil is the native vegetable oil with the highest omega-3 content (over 50%) and its use contributes to a healthy and balanced diet. However, linseed oil does not contain the important omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are considered particularly important for health and are found in fish and algae oils. Even though our body can convert the alpha-linolenic acid present in linseed oil into EPA and DHA to a certain degree (conversion factor between 0.5% and 10%), linseed oil is not sufficient to compensate for an EPA or DHA deficit.

A vegetable omega-3 oil, with high marine omega-3 fatty acid content (EPA and DHA), is Omega-3 Vegan. With just one teaspoon per day, you take in 2,000 mg of the valuable marine fatty acids – 100% fish-free.

What criteria are important when choosing a good fish oil?

The following quality factors should be checked:

  • Low levels of environmental contaminants and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
  • Sustainable and high quality fishing
  • Pleasant taste
  • Natural fish oil from wild catch
  • Correct dosage

NORSAN fish oils and cod oils meet these criteria and thus reflect a high quality standard.

What is the difference between natural fish oil and a fish oil concentrate?

Many omega-3 products consist of fish oil concentrates, which are extracted by various chemical processes and concentrated higher. As a result, these concentrates often contain only 2-3 different fatty acids. In comparison, the content of a natural fish oil complex consists of over 50 different fatty acids, which contribute positive effects to the body in various ways and are equivalent to eating fish. In addition, the risk of oxidation is lower with natural fish oil, as they are more stable fatty acid compounds.

Olive oil

Is the olive oil suitable for frying?

Like all cold-pressed oils, our olive oil should only be used for the preparation of cold dishes or slightly warm dishes. Through a frying process, the many good ingredients would be lost.

Is the product gluten-free?

Yes, all our products are gluten-free.

Where does the olive oil come from?

The olive oil “Oro del Desierto” that we use in some of our products (Total, Vegan and KIDS) comes from Rafael from Spain and his traditional family farm, where they work according to strict organic guidelines. The olive groves are located in a small valley in Tabernas (Almería) in the south of Spain near Málaga, where there are more than 3000 hours of sunshine per year and the dry, stable climate leads to this special product.

Why is olive oil in the fish and algae oils?

Olive oil has been chosen especially considering its high polyphenol content. Polyphenols from olives are important antioxidants and the polyphenols protect the delicate omega-3 fatty acids on their way through our body. They ensure that the omega-3 fatty acids arrive intact where they are needed.

Omega-3 Arktis

Are there heavy metals in the Omega-3 Arktis?

As the oceans become increasingly polluted, this also affects the fish in the world’s oceans. The further down the food chain the fish are, the higher the levels of PCBs and heavy metals. For example, sardines have a lower value than cod.

NORSAN cod oil is gently purified from PCBs and heavy metals in Norway. Thus, the Omega-3 Arktis oil also shows best values in this respect: Less than one fifth of the EU maximum limit and comparatively only 2% of the amounts contained in a serving (100 g) of cod. If one teaspoon of omega-3 Arctic oil is consumed daily, this represents only about 10% of the average daily intake of PCBs from other foods.

Can you overdose the oil and if so, what happens then?

An overdose is possible, but very difficult to realize. Theoretically, this would require taking about more than a third of the bottle a day. The consequences of an overdose would be:

  • Occurrence of bruises and
  • dilution of the blood.
From which fish is the Omega-3 Arktis fish oil obtained?

The Omega-3 Arktisconsists of a cod oil (rich in DHA). The cod oil contained is from sustainable fisheries (wild catch) and is produced in Norway. Crucial for the quality of the cod oil is the right selection of the raw material – i.e. the cod. The nutrient-rich cold Arctic Ocean, where the cod grows up and lives, ensures a unique and high quality. The natural Omega-3 Arktis Cod Oil comes from wild caught cod. The catch area is located directly off the Norwegian coast. The caught fish is processed within 2 hours. To deliver the catch as fresh as possible, the boats of the fishing fleet enter the harbor every day.

How much iodine is contained in Omega-3 Arktis?

The naturally contained iodine is significantly filtered out during the gentle purification process. Laboratory analyses of NORSAN Omega-3 Arktis confirm an iodine content of < 10 µg per recommended daily dosage (10 ml).

Is the product gluten-free?

Yes, all our products are gluten-free.

What accumulates in the human body in the long term despite low levels of pollutants in the oil?

Our body has the ability to eliminate pollutants. This can be done through the organs skin, kidney, liver, lymph and intestine. Due to the very low level of harmful substances in NORSAN Cod Oil, the intake of cod oil is therefore harmless with regard to toxic ingredients. The low levels of harmful substances are recognized and excreted by our body in a natural way.

What is the average shelf life of a bottle of Omega-3 Arktis oil and how should it be stored?

One bottle of Omega-3 Arktis contains 200 ml. With the recommended daily dosage of 10 ml (1 tablespoon) per day, one bottle will last for about 20 days. The unopened bottle should be stored in a dry place and not above 25 °C. Once opened, you must store the bottle in the refrigerator and consume it within 45 days.

What is the Omega-3 Arktis made of?

Omega-3 Arktis (200 ml) with lemon flavor is a natural high-dose but non-concentrated cod oil from 100% Arctic wild-caught fish.

Ingredients:
Fish oil (cod oil from the North Atlantic), Mixed tocopherols (vitamin E), organic lemon oil.

What is the recommended daily dosage?

The daily recommended dosage is 10 ml, which corresponds to one tablespoon. Do not exceed the recommended daily intake unless otherwise prescribed by your doctor.

What is the sustainability aspect of Omega-3 Arktis Oil?

NORSAN has been awarded one of the most prestigious certificates in the industry, “Friend of the Sea”. This guarantees a contribution to the protection of the environment and, above all, of the world’s oceans by an objective inspection body. Among other things, it is intended to ensure that the global marine habitat is preserved. For this reason, we only source our fish from waters that are not overfished and are certified as sustainable by FOS. We also avoid fishing practices that encourage bycatch of endangered species and make our manufacturing processes as energy efficient as possible. In addition, supporting non-profit organizations that actively work to protect the oceans is very close to our hearts. We are therefore always happy to receive new suggestions for sustainable projects and organizations that we can support. You are welcome to send these to us by e-mail.

What is the taste of Omega-3 Arctic Oil?

Primarily, the light lemon note (mild) can be tasted. The oil does not taste fishy and thus has a very pleasant taste without belching.

What percentage of EPA, DHA and vitamins does Omega-3 Arctic oil contain?

The composition of Omega-3 Arctic with cod oil (values calculated on a tbsp (10 ml)):

EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) = 700 mg,
DHA (docosanhexaenoic acid) = 1,060 mg,
Vitamin A = 546 IU
Vitamin E = 8.8 mg (mixed tocopherol).

The Omega-3 Arctic is free of iodine.

When and how is it best to take the Omega-3 Arctic?

You can take the Omega-3 Arctic without problems at any time of day. In order for the body to absorb and process the Omega-3 oil optimally, we recommend taking the oil by late afternoon, as bioavailability is best during the day. You are welcome to take the oil with or with a meal – but this is not a must.

When do I take the Omega-3 Arctic and when the Omega-3 Total?

The Omega-3 Total is fish oil, which has a high EPA content. This means that it is particularly responsible for maintaining normal blood lipid levels, blood pressure levels and for supporting heart function, but it is also often taken for its anti-inflammatory effects (e.g. rheumatism). We recommend it as a therapeutic oil when there is already a pre-existing disease/pre-existing condition.

The Omega-3 Arctic is fish oil, which is obtained exclusively from the cod. Here the DHA content is higher and is therefore increasingly used to support brain function and to maintain normal vision. It is an oil which we also recommend for prevention and therefore a lower daily dose is set here, which of course can also be increased.

Omega-3 Capsules

Are there heavy metals in the omega-3 capsules?

As the oceans become increasingly polluted, this also affects the fish in the world’s oceans. The further down the food chain the fish are, the higher the levels of PCBs and heavy metals. For example, sardines have lower levels than cod.

Thus, the oil also shows best values in this respect: Less than one fifth of the EU maximum limit and comparatively only 2% of the amounts contained in a serving (100 g) of cod. If 4 capsules of omega-3 capsules are taken daily, this represents only about 10% of the average daily intake of PCBs from other foods.

Do I have to burp fishy after taking the capsules?

The high quality of the raw materials means that there is no unpleasant belching after taking the omega-3 capsules. The “freshness” of the oil is important. Only four hours pass between the catching of the fish and the processing. The unique and gentle processing and purification process ensures the high quality of NORSAN fish oil. Due to these factors, there is no unpleasant belching after ingestion.

How big is a capsule?

One capsule is about 2.5 cm in size.

How high must the therapeutic dosage be to achieve a positive effect?

The therapeutic dosage is over 2,000 mg of omega-3 fatty acids per day. This corresponds to approx. 5 capsules of omega-3. This dosage recommendation is based on the empirical values of over 3,000 fatty acid analyses and is therefore considered to be empirically tested.

How high should the dosage be for children?

Children and adolescents can also take the omega-3 capsules without any problems. The following rule of thumb should be observed: 2,000 mg omega-3 fatty acids (5 capsules) are suitable for an adult person weighing 70 kg or more. This means that a child weighing 35 kg should take 2 1/2 capsules per day.

Especially for the needs of children, we have developed the Omega-3 Kids. For the good development of a child, the two marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are important. Therefore, Omega-3 Kids contains a combination of cod oil (rich in DHA) and fish oil (rich in EPA) in a suitable ratio.

Yes, all our products are gluten-free.

Is there a vegetable omega-3 oil for vegans or vegetarians?

Linseed and hemp oil have a high proportion of omega-3 fatty acids in the form of α-linolenic acid (ALA). The problem is that the body must first convert the fatty acid ALA into the actually important fatty acids EPA and DHA. However, our enzymes can only convert a maximum of 10% of ALA into EPA and even a maximum of 0.5% into DHA. Even with a very high intake of ALA, it is therefore not possible to achieve good values for EPA and DHA – the actually important omega-3 fatty acids.

A vegetable omega-3 oil, with high marine omega-3 fatty acid content (EPA and DHA), is Omega-3 Vegan. With just one teaspoon per day, you take in 2,000 mg of the valuable marine fatty acids – 100% fish-free. Omega-3 Vegan can also be taken by children and adolescents without any problems. The following rule of thumb should be observed: 2,000 mg of omega-3 fatty acids (1 tsp/5 ml) are suitable for an adult person weighing 70 kg or more. This means for example for a 35 kg child 1/2 teaspoon omega-3 per day or 1 teaspoon every 2nd day.

My child has problems taking the oil pure, what can I do?

Taking an oil pure, regardless of whether it is a fish, olive or rapeseed oil, is something unfamiliar for many at first – especially for the youngest among us. We can absolutely understand that, which is why we recommend that you simply integrate the oil into the child’s daily diet. Try adding a teaspoon of Omega-3 Kids to your child’s juice, yogurt or cereal.

What accumulates in the human body in the long term despite low levels of pollutants in the oil?

Our body has the ability to eliminate pollutants. This can be done via the organs skin, kidney, liver, lymph and intestine.
